• You may think twice about using car wash vacuums: Amenities like the use of free self-serve car vacuums have become a staple of car washes of late, but what if their use doesn’t really add to the cleanliness of your car? PandaHub.com recently commissioned a study looking into what is actually found in the self-serve vacuums that many of us routinely use. The answer? A lot of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes and E. coli. In some cases, you may actually be making your car dirtier by the vacuums’ use. They do offer some suggestions on how to improve (and sanitize) the vacuuming experience. Read more here.

• Sud Stop Car Wash held a grand opening celebration over the weekend for its newest site in Greenwood, South Carolina, its second in the state. Also opening in the first quarter of 2025 are locations in Mt. Dora, Florida; North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Kernersville, N.C. In all, Sud Stop plans to open 33 locations in the next two years.

• A once-neglected property that has undergone four months of renovations is now making its debut as a new Stop-Wash-Go Car Wash in Clifton, Colorado., outside of Grand Junction. The site offers self-serve washing bays, with plans to introduce a drive-through automatic wash later this year.

• A longtime car wash in Norfolk, Virginia, was damaged by fire on Jan. 20 and forced to close temporarily for remodeling and repairs. SSS Express Car Wash, a full-service car wash and express detailing center in operation since 1961, was engulfed in flames and smoke when safety crews arrived. Cars inside the building were damaged as well. No injuries were reported nor any cause for the fire readily apparent.

• The Melbourne (Florida) City Council recently voted 5-2 in favor of the first reading and public hearing of an ordinance granting a conditional use for a new Mister Car Wash location. The Planning and Zoning Board had previously approved the proposal unanimously at their December meeting, subject to several conditions aimed at mitigating noise.

• Leicestershire car wash site to be replaced by new homes: A “nuisance” car wash in a village in the county of Leicestershire in England will be bulldozed for new homes. The former petrol station in the village of Earl Shilton, which is currently home to a car wash and car repair workshop, will be replaced by five new homes in a plan recently approved by the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. HBBC planning officers said the site currently “makes a negative contribution to the character of the area.” Read more here.
