• ICE immigration raids include several Southern California car washes: The recent increase in raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the Los Angeles area that rave resulted in protests across the country include nearly a half dozen car washes. According to a report by KNX News 97.1 FM, at least five Southern California car washes have been raided by federal immigration agents over the past several days. At least 26 workers have been detained from those sites in the latest crack down on illegal immigrants, a labor advocacy nonprofit said. Read more here.

   Express Hits  🎯 

• The city of Birmingham, Alabama, recently extended its moratorium on automated car washes for another 90 days following a public hearing by the city council. Residents had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the issue, but there were no speakers opposing the extension. Council members acknowledged the need for stricter regulations on the placement of these businesses. The moratorium, initially enacted in March 2024, was a response to a surge in business applications for automated car washes.

• Eleven Western Builders Inc. recently completed construction of a new BlueWave Express Car Wash location in Morgan Hill, California. Eleven Western is a family-owned retail general contractor based in Escondido, California. The 2,880 square-foot car wash site is now open. BlueWave Express, based in Texas and founded in 2007, has more than 60 sites across Texas and California.

• The city council of Kewanee, Illinois, has put approval of a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) loan on hold for a new car wash to be built by KTown Real Estate on a site that formerly housed a Piggly Wiggly supermarket. The hold came after one of the partners in the car wash project objected because he said the deal had been changed from what the council had originally agreed to. Council members had agreed to a reduction in the TIF loan amount from what the developers had originally sought.

• Brazilian man was working illegally at car wash in Tullamore (Ireland): A Brazilian national was recently charged with working illegally in Ireland during last week’s Tullamore Court. According to the Offaly Express, Joseph Rodrigues da Silva, 22, of Tullamore was charged with violating Sections 2 and 3 of the Employment Act while working illegally in a car wash facility. He pleaded guilty. da Silva’s attorney told the court his client fled Brazil for Ireland because of threats to his life from a criminal organization. He was convicted and sentenced to one month in prison, which was suspended for two years.
