• Birmingham’s moratorium on car washes will continue: Following a recent public hearing, the city council of Birmingham, Alabama, voted to extend – for the second time – a moratorium on new automated car washes, which was first adopted last March. Council members said the moratorium is needed because of a surge in applications to build automated washes, including in areas close to homes and with significant pedestrian traffic. The resolution which passed extends the moratorium by 120 days, with the option of extending it an additional 90 days, according to city officials. Read more here.

• CJ’s Car Wash has scheduled a Feb. 13 grand opening of its new state-of-the-art express tunnel wash location in Concordia, Kansas. The site features an advanced onsite water reclamation system, reducing water consumption and benefiting the Concordia community and surrounding areas. It will also include Level 3 DC Fast EV Chargers.

• From Jan. 17-19, El Car Wash will donate a portion of proceeds from all retail washes and memberships purchased at any of its locations to support wildfire relief efforts in the Los Angeles area. Donations will benefit the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles.

• Suzanne Gardiner, general manager of commercial operations in Canada for The Mark Anthony Group, will deliver the welcome keynote address on March 4 as part of the industry dinner at The Convenience U CARWACS Show (Canada’s largest convenience, gas and car wash event) in Toronto. Gardiner has 25 years of leadership experience with major beverage alcohol companies in both the United States and Canada.

• An Eclipse Car Wash, which has been under construction for a few years, is finally set to open in Godfrey, Illinois. The location plans to hire around 20 workers. The state-of-the-art facility can accommodate dually trucks, which is rare for a car wash, and has four dedicated lanes with 36 vacuum bays.

• Bigger is also warmer at Edmonton car wash: Not only is Bubbles Car Wash and Detail Centre the largest full-service car wash company in Canada, but its two-story Edmonton facility is among the largest in the country. An additional amenity is that all services, including vacuums, are located indoors. The 23,000-sq.-ft. location, opened in June 2021 and features a 7,500-sq.-ft. detail shop with 12 bays on the second level and a ground floor 100-ft. PECO tunnel to complete the service-heavy package. While services are being performed, customers have the option to wait in the site’s high-style lounge area. Read more here.
